Recent regenerative medicine and tissue engineeringstrategies (using cells, scaffolds, medical devicesand gene therapy) have led to fascinating progressof translation of basic research towards clinicalapplications. In the past decade, great deal of researchhas focused on developing various three dimensional(3D) organs, such as bone, skin, liver, kidney and ear,using such strategies in order to replace or regeneratedamaged organs for the purpose of maintaining orrestoring organs' functions that may have been lost dueto aging, accident or disease. The surface properties ofa material or a device are key aspects in determining thesuccess of the implant in biomedicine, as the majorityof biological reactions in human body occur on surfacesor interfaces. Furthermore, it has been established inthe literature that cell adhesion and proliferation are,to a great extent, influenced by the micro- and nanosurfacecharacteristics of biomaterials and devices. Inaddition, it has been shown that the functions of stemcells, mesenchymal stem cells in particular, could beregulated through physical interaction with specificnanotopographical cues. Therefore, guided stem cellproliferation, differentiation and function are of greatimportance in the regeneration of 3D tissues and organsusing tissue engineering strategies. This review willprovide an update on the impact of nanotopography onmesenchymal stem cells for the purpose of developinglaboratory-based 3D organs and tissues, as well as themost recent research and case studies on this topic.
